ANIME HELL IKASUCON 2005: Heino, Fish, Firsts, Military Bases, and Milk Duds
by Gavv occasional assistance provided by: Hell Minion Goofyrobo Hell Visiting Deutschedigiarchaelogist Pochi (aka the Heino Hunter) Hell Union Subcontractor Gyopi (former abroad-liver, original finder of Fish Fight)
The room was pretty cool. It was nearly completely ready for me when i got there a half hour before showtime, got set up pretty smoothly and got the slide show going while everything else got set up. Crowd showed up early, and by the time the lights went down, the crowd already took up all 100 or so seats in the room and lined the walls.
Throughout the first 10-15min there was a weird sound problem where the audio would dip every minute or so. after some stealthy cable changes we stumbled on the problem of the sound system amp being too smart for it's own good. it had an automatic setting that guaged when it was getting sound from the microphones and automatically dipping the video throughput sound. since we were sitting up front on stage, it was picking up the video audio feeding back through the on mics. after that, we were golden.
The Playlist
Highs: way too many, the crowd was *extremely* hot, nearly everything got at least very good reaction, and the few favorites and surprises got huge pops. Average pound per pound, person per person crowd enthusiasm definitely rivaled any show i've been witness to. Also greatly encouraging was that not only there were some experienced Hell-patrons, there were a lot of the crowd that guaging by gut reaction alone had not gone thru the experience and had that much more energy. Even some clips we thought were fairly played-out got
Lows: About the only thing that got tepid reaction was Halcali Tandam.

At this point we announced that we had made some decisions about the Anime Hell Fan of the Night. we select six people to come to the front. they each draw 'raffle tickets' we ad-hoc made. The jumping around girl dressed as Ed took away the coveted box of milk duds, though it's doubtful she needed any more sugar at that point. We told the other five to hold on, we have one more special thing to do, something that has never ever been done at Anime Hell. Another winning number was drawn, and it was Patrick Wilcutt?. For the first time ever, the lucky winner of Anime Hell Fan of the Night walked away with the back-up dvds of the night's performance.
Without dropoff, we transitioned into Midnight Madness, where we played Fisting the North Star, Evangelion: ReDeath, Fanboy Bebop, & Inuyasha:Lord of the Jewel, as well as some parody shorts from NonDE films. thanks for coming to the show...

aside: With the show ending at 3am, and my company golf tournament back 120 miles away starting at 8am, on the lovely fort benjamin harrison course, I lost my three-year reign as champion in a lovely 7 hour grind of 90 degrees, 95% humidity, drowned-rat producing showers. I sacrificed for Anime Hell!!!

Posted - 09/15/2006 : 19:18:20 I just came across this forum and I would like to say...
I am the Ed that won those coveted MilkDuds. They ended up half-melting and all sticking together, but in the end, they were delicious.
I am very nostalgic now that I found this place, for I am not allowed to go to cons anymore. lol |

Huh, that went over like gangbusters at AZ. It's interesting to see what pops at each Hell showing and what doesn't. Still, sounds like you had an awesome Hell - in particular, Segata Sanshiro is a Hell natural, and I'm looking forward to seeing some of the new Heino bits. I also like the idea of hurling Pixie Stix at the crowd, though that could be potentially dangerous when sugar crazed insomniacs start rioting. Sorry I couldn't get new clips to you in time for the con, but I'm hoping those will be out the door shortly.
i think it's primarily because many in the audience must have felt it went on about twice as long as it should :). perhaps if it were 2-2.5min rather than 4 minute song :)
Heino Wigwam is my new 'finisher' (edited together with the Porky sonuvabitch bit as the show ender) (after previously having done the '18 Weapons' ending. 'Heino Wigwam' is a segment from a german comedy show that makes it look like some Heino music video is starting (song called 'Komm in meinen Wigwam'), when 'something' interesting happens ;) ;)...
a lot of the heino stuff we've uncovered really doesn't work in and of themselves (and those that don't we usually grab appropriate stills from for use in the Anim Hell Slide Show), but a few do, like Harmonica Heino.

Thanks for the report, Gavv! I really really wish I coulda been there... -danno!
and as it turns out, in a totally unintentional coincidence, the candy was mixed bags of 'willy wonka' brand (nerds, taffy, etc) candy ^^
